Whitelists, Blacklists, Quarantine - What you need to know.

Whitelist - this is a list of email addresses that will bypass the spam system. If you always want to receive email from a person this the where their emails address should be. There are several ways addresses can get on the whitelist:

  • Send and email more than once to someone
  • Click the whitelist button for an email in the spam report
  • Whitelist and email in the quarantine in webmail
  • Manually add the address to the whitelist from within webmail

Blacklists - this is a list of email addresses that all email from these addresses will be automatically deleted. there are a few ways for email addresses to get on the blacklist, none are automatic:

  • Click to blacklist button in the spam report next to an email you wish to blacklist
  • Select blacklist against an email in the quarantine in webmail
  • Manually enter an email address into the blacklist from within webmail

Quarantine - quarantine is where the Anti-SPAM system puts email that appears to be spam. Certain email behaviors will cause emails to be quarantined. For example an email that talks about viagra very much is very likely to be quarantined. Emails placed in quarantine are automatically deleted after 7 days. You do not need to take any action against quarantined items unless you wish to receive the email or whitelist it. More information about this subject can be found in the SPAM report tutorial and the webmail tutorial.
